Back to Owlbut's History of England

Fifty years of history and one Queen rules for the whole time. Victoria was only 18 when she came to the throne in 1837 so, rather beautifully, if you like mirror images, she was 81 when this period ended. The Industrial revolution continued at a great pace. The United Kingdom led the way. There were more workers available for factories and our country had a good supply of water to use to power the new machines. We also had our great Empire around the world and, by 1890, 75% of all the ships in the world were British built. We're still on top, just.

At the start of this period of history, the estimated population of England (to the nearest million) was 15 million or 3,375,000 houses on our strange method, explained in the Mesolithic Age introduction.
