Fifty years of history and one Queen rules for the whole time. Victoria was only 18 when she came to the throne in 1837 so, rather beautifully, if you like mirror images, she was 81 when this period ended. The United Kingdom led the way in the industrial revolution. There were more workers available for factories and our country had a good supply of water to use to power the new machines.

In 1851, the estimated population of England (to the nearest ¼ million) was 15¼ million people.
