I live in a field in Essex in England. I am a rather special owl because I have a human friend who is going to share my adventures on my website. Well, he thinks I
am sharing his so I let him believe that.
Short-eared owls live all over the world except in Australia and the Antarctic. We are quite rare and are on amber status under the RSPB conservation list.
I have set up this website so that we can all learn things; maybe Richard helped a bit. I hope we're going to have lots of fun together. Scroll down to see
how I got my name.
Hi. I suppose you could say that I am Owlbut's keeper but he prefers to call me his friend. I'm happy with that. I have been involved in education now for nearly
40 years, longer if you count the time I was at school, and I still learn something new almost every day.
I have also written, or contributed to, around a dozen educational books.
In 1985-86 I took my own children out of primary school for a year and travelled around the coast of Great Britain. Then, in 1994-95 I ran the forerunner
of this project when 50 primary schools followed my journey around the coastline of England through weekly, 12 page newsletters accompanied by 6 or 7 photos.
I've always wanted to go off again and do something similar but various things have stopped me till now but in September 2026, the 41st anniversary of my first journey,
it WILL (probably) all happen again. Trust me, I never give up. All of this may be why my grandchildren call me "Crazy Grandad".
Caw, my name is Colin and I am a special kind of Crow. All of my family have black beaks and black feet but I met a fairy in the woods
where I live and she gave me special powers so I can talk to Molly the Forest School Leader.
I was also so bored of being all black that the fairy agreed to magic me some golden feet and beak! I live in the forest
where I met Molly my human friend. I enjoy teaching her all about the trees and she teaches me lots about Forest School!
I hope you
will enjoy learning with us!
Hello, my name is Molly and I’m a Forest School Leader who’s incredibly excited to be joining Owlbut and Richard on their new project "The School of the Air".
It's so rewarding to witness how being in nature can inspire, spark imagination, boost confidence, induce calmness, build resilience and bring out one's character.
I love the outdoors and all things in nature and I hope to inspire as many as I can to love nature too!
I bet you want to know how I got my name. You see every time I answered a question my little friends would say, “yes, owl but how....” and then ask another question.
I thought they were calling me Owlbut. Watch the video to see.
It seemed a nice name and then, one day, I was flying across a field and some children were playing and they kept calling for Owlbut to join in so I knew it must be
a real name. Of course now I know they were shouting out to Albert but, anyhow, that's how I got my name and I really like it.
