Notes for teachers or adults

History As It Happened

Who Can Do It

We suggest this project is done by students between the age of 8 and 15. This is an individual project and can be done at home or by individuals in a classroom situation.

What You'll Need

You will need access to a word processing package and, possibly, a scanner.

How To Do It

This is a very simple project to explain. You take an event shown on one of our Times Past timelines and write a report about it in less than 500 words. Simple.

You can write from one of two different points of view.

  • You can imagine you were actually part of the event and are writing to a friend who wasn't there
  • You can write it as if you were a journalist who wants to tell people about what went on

The choice is yours. The end result should look like a lettter or a page from a newspaper. You could add a picture if you want.

When You've Finished

If you are doing this project on your own at home, you can email a copy of the finished project to us and it may find its way on to our site. Send it to homeprojectsi@owlbut.co.uk That would be owlingly brilliant. Off you go.

We are asking schools to set up a special part of their school website called Owlbut's World of Learning and all work done by pupils should be uploaded there. Each project, if you decide to do more than one, should have a separate section. Send the link to olderowlettesprojects@owlbut.co.uk.

We will start uploading projects sent to us and links from schools in September 2025. The projects and links will be accessed from this page.
