Henry III died on 16 November 1272. He was buried, as we said, in Westminster Abbey, which he had largely rebuilt in the gothic style during his reign. He was succeeded by his son Edward, who, you may remember, had wished his dad a fond farewell in 1270 and set off on a crusade. As soon as the news reached Edward, who Henry had named after his hero Edward the Confessor, he rushed back to England, arriving in 1274 as his Ryanair horse was on a go slow. The barons, meanwhile, wanting no more fights, had sworn an oath of allegiance to Edward as soon as Henry popped his clogs.
