In 1295 Edward called a parliament which has
become known as the model parliament. It included more people from the lower classes but its main purpose was to approve a rise in taxes so Edward, the military
man, could pay for his wars, mainly against Scotland.
That same year Edward won a major battle against the Scots and captured the Stone of Scone, a red sandstone block on which many Scottish Kings had
been crowned. He took it back to England where it was used in future English coronations.
The picture shows the stone in place under the Coronation Chair.
The fighting continued after this and in 1297 a guy called William Wallace and the Scottish Army defeated the English at the Battle of Stirling
Bridge and the following year King Edward defeated Wallace at the Battle of Falkirk.
