Now, where were we? Oh yes, Henry Bolingbroke has been crowned Henry IV of England. It’s a good job we did all those Roman numerals here. His claim to the throne was that he was the son of John of Gaunt who was in turn the son of Edward III. Richard II, who he deposed, was the son of Edward, the Black Prince (remember him), who was the first son of Edward III.

I thought I would make this a bit easier for you by putting it all on a family tree. I have included a few people who we will be meeting later so don’t worry if you don’t know who they are. I have also not included loads of brothers and sisters of the main people. There is a very simple reason. I couldn’t fit them on.

John of Gaunt had married Blanche of Lancaster and when her father died John was made Duke of Lancaster. As you can see John’s younger brother, Edmund, was made Duke of York and in the next timeline you will learn how well the Houses of York and the Lancaster didn’t get on.
