The Tudors
Timeline

In 1813 an artist, William Daniell, and a writer, Richard Ayton, set out on a journey around Great Britain's coast. Daniell was to make paintings as he travelled while Ayton would write the text for the book they hoped to publish. The journey was done in six stages over a period of ten years. Ayton only accompanied Daniell on the first two stages.

These went from Land's End to Holyhead in Wales and then from Holyhead to Kirkcudbright in Scotland. After that Daniell continued around the Scottish Islands and round the top of Scotland and down to Dundee. He next went from Dundee to Southend and his final two journeys took him from Southend to Torquay and finally back to Land's End.

The books were published in eight volumes over the years with a total of 308 prints. The final volume was published in 1825. In 1962 306 of the original prints were found and they are now in the Tate gallery in London.

William and Richard certainly started something in 1813 and William Richard carried it on in 1985-6, 1994-5, 2001 and, hopefully, 2023-25. For those that don't know, my two first names are William Richard. Luckily, a camera can now replace an artist and as I hope you know, I want to take our followers on a virtual journey with us. What's more, we'll do it in two years and publish as we go. Progress.
