The Tudors
Timeline

On 6 May 1954 a British athlete achieved something people had been trying to do for some time. He ran a mile in under four minutes in an official race. His time was 3minutes 59.4 seconds. The athlete was a junior doctor who had a minimum amount of time for training. His name was Roger Bannister and he was 25 years old. He set the record on a small cinder track in Oxford with the help of two fellow British runners, Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher. Bannister went to the same school as I did but obviously a little bit earlier. He also went on to become a very famous neuro-surgeon.

Since then over 1,400 male athletes have officially run under four minutes. A four minute mile means an average speed of 15 mph (24.14kph) or 14.91 seconds for 100 metres.
