Timeline

On 15 April 1989 there occurred the worst disaster in sporting history in the UK. 96 Liverpool fans were killed and 766 people were injured in a crush at Hillsborough Football Stadium in Sheffield. The crush occurred at the Leppings Lane End, where Liverpool supporters had grouped.

What followed was a disgrace. Jumping forward, in April 2016, 27 years after the tragedy, an inquest ruled that the supporters were unlawfully killed due to gross negligent failures by police and ambulance services to fulfil their duty of care to those supporters.

In between time several newspapers had written totally untrue stories blaming drunken fans for the crush and claiming fans who survived were robbing from those who died. The worst story appeared in The Sun newspaper, owned then by Rupert Murdoch's publishing company but a similar story appeared in The Times, also owned by Rupert Murdoch's publishing company. To this day, many people in Liverpool refuse to buy The Sun.

It later turned out that the police had been feeding some of the stories to shift the blame away from their actions, which undoubtedly contributed in a major way to the deaths.
