At around this time, archaeologists believe
that some settlements, in what is now Somerset, were built on stilts over a very wet, marshy area. The marshy area has now vanished but one of the villages was
at a place called Glastonbury.
It must have been very difficult without modern machinery to drive the wooden stilts into the river bed and then build the platforms on which the
houses stood. I bet a few builders fell in.
Nowadays, Glastonbury is where they hold a music festival every two years and some festival goers, who have been there when it rained, may have
wished the wooden platforms still existed. In 2014 there was also a lot of flooding in the same area, which is now known as the Somerset Levels.
Some pictures of the 2014 flooding on the Somerset levels. Could it have been like this sometimes during the Iron Age?
These photos are of the Glastonbury festival when it rains but the music is fantastic and the atmosphere even better. Maybe I'll see you there one day.
