Timeline

If you remember, the Brigantes tribe in northern England was ruled by Queen Cartimandua. She was the one who had handed over Caratacus to the Romans 20 years before. Because things are happening more often and we have a written record of events, people keep reappearing. Anyhow dear old Cartimandua, and she must have been quite old by then, was overthrown by her ex-husband Venutius (still no John).

She had left him soon after handing over Caratacus and gone off with his armour bearer who no doubt shielded her from any gossip. In 57AD Venutius tried to attack Cartimandua and the tribe but was defeated with help from the Romans.

He obviously held a grudge for a long time because 12 years later he staged another revolt and Cartimandua, and possibly the armour bearer, fled to Rome asking for help. She was never heard of again but the Romans decided the time had come to conquer these northern tribes and, the latest governor, Qunitus Pertilius Cerialis, defeated Venutius. By 74AD Quintus, or Pertilius or Cerialis, whichever he was known as, had reached Carlisle, (map time) where he built the most northern Roman fort.

Here's a little quiz for you. In Roman times towns, like Carlisle, were known by Latin names. See if you can guess what they are now known as from that Latin name. Click on a name to see if you are correct.
