When he got back to Rome, Constantine converted to Christianity and in 314 AD said that he would give freedom of religious
belief to everyone. His conversion to Christianity was an interesting decision because he actually relegated his own status. Until then all Emperors were treated
as gods with temples dedicated to them and worshipped by their subjects. Christianity believes in only one God, so Constantine now became mortal and an ordinary
human being.
Constantine seems to have not been quite sure whether his old pagan religion or his new Christian one was correct because it was only on his death bed
that he was baptised into the Christian faith.
