Back to the Anglo-Saxons calendar

Title
Timeline

By 775 things had changed again and the King of Mercia, who went by the name of Offa, reckoned he was now the King of all England. This seems very unlikely but he may have had the most powerful kingdom, Offa had fought off, or should I say fought offa, the Welsh, who kept leaking across the border into his kingdom. He then built a ditch, or dyke, to keep them out. Offa’s ditch was an 80-mile-long earthwork which marked his border with the Welsh kingdoms.

You can see that even now the various tribes and kingdoms were still fighting each other. It was, as I said, a time of frequent wars and battles about who was the top kingdom. Anyhow Offa said he was King of all England, take it or leave it and that was his final offer as he died in 796 AD, by which time the Anglo-Saxons had a bigger problem than wondering which of them was king of all England.
