Notes for teachers or adults

If I'd Been Born Somewhere Else

Who Can Do It

We suggest this project is done by students between the age of 8 and 15. This is an individual project and can be done at home or by individuals in a classroom situation. This is the geographical equivalent of the "Take Me Back To Another Time" project.

What You'll Need

You will need access to a word processing package and, possibly, a scanner.

How To Do It

With this project we want you to use your imagination, check out some facts, and think what your life would be like if you had been born somewhere else; in another continent. You can use our “The World” section, here, and choose a different continent to the one you live in and then click on that continent and pick a country from the flags you see.

Then you can use some of the info on our page for that country and do some more research yourself. You can pick a large city, a small town or a little village in the country and try to find out more about the area. Among other facts, we give you the weather, the number of people with mobile phones and those who have the internet and with that information you can think how your life would be different. As we said you will almost certainly have to do some more research yourself.

We would like your finished project to cover the following sections (but you can add more).

facts
The name of the city, town or village you have chosen and which continent it is in.
The type of home you might be living in.
The weather in and around the area where you now live.
The sort of food you might be eating.
How close to your school do you live and how do you get there each day?
Where are the nearest shops?
How do you spend your leisure time?

facts
Some of the information will be on our site and I'm sure you can find out other information you need through the internet. Maybe you can find the website of a school in the area you have chosen and read their website. Maybe somebody has written a blog. However, big HOWEVER, don't start chatting with anyone. You won't know who it is and they might try to get personal information from you. Just search google for anything you can.

facts
Once you have done your research, used our site, googled or whatever, we want you to write a blog of a day in your imaginary life in this country. Include all the bits we've asked for plus anything else you have found out. At the end of the blog, write a concluding paragraph saying if you think you would like this lifestyle and if so, why, and if not, also why. Your blog should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words. If you like you can include any pictures of life in your chosen place.

When You've Finished

If you are doing this project on your own at home, you can email a copy of the finished project to us and it may find its way on to our site. Send it to homeprojectsi@owlbut.co.uk That would be owlingly brilliant. Off you go.

We are asking schools to set up a special part of their school website called Owlbut's World of Learning and all work done by pupils should be uploaded there. Each project, if you decide to do more than one, should have a separate section. Send the link to olderowlettesprojects@owlbut.co.uk.

We will start uploading projects sent to us and links from schools in September 2025. The projects and links will be accessed from this page.
