The Tudors

Andorra is a very small country in the south west corner of Europe. It is on the border between France and Spain, high in the Pyrenees mountains.

Andorra is a landlocked country, which means it has no borders with a coast.

The land is mountainous with narrow valleys. These valleys are still quite high, with the lowest point in Andorra being at 840 metres above sea level.

The geographical coordinates for the centre of Andorra, also known as lines of latitude and longitude, are:-
Latitude - 42 30N
Longitude - 1 30E.

The capital of Andorra is Andorra la Vella.

Andorra is a principality, which means it is ruled by a Prince. For 715 years, until 1993, Andorra was ruled by French and Spanish leaders. Therefore, it was actually a co-principality. From 1607, these rulers were the French President and the Bishop of Urgell. Urgell is a small district in Spain, just south of Andorra. In 1993 Andorra introduced a parliamentary democracy. This elected parliament now rules the country though the two “princes” remain as the Heads of State. Andorra is a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of the government.

In elections everyone over the age of 18 can vote.

The currency in Andorra is the euro, although Andorra is not a member of the European Union but has a special relationship with the group.

Catalan is the official language. Catalan is a form of Spanish.

The potential support ratio is 4.5. This is the number of working-age people (ages 15-64) per one elderly person (ages 65+). As a population ages, the potential support ratio tends to fall, meaning there are fewer potential workers to support the elderly.
