One of the biggest changes here was with the introduction of the railways. It didn't really take off big time until we go into the Victorian era but travel was beginning to become so much easier and people who had never left the town or village where they were born could now travel around. You could only get a maximum of probably 8 people on a horse drawn coach while you could get several hundred on a train. In effect you now had hundreds of people paying for the journey and the costs were lower. Trains also removed the danger of the highwaymen. In London horse drawn buses started running. Clever businessmen saw that people needed to move around more often, and quicker, and so this was a way to do it. Other towns soon followed and public transport began to grow. This was also the era when even poorer people started to take a holiday and it saw the beginning of seaside holidays for everyone. The pleasure pier at Brighton was built in 1823. Sport became more organised. The first rules for Rugby were drawn up in 1845. Publishing was so easy that books by great authors could be read by ordinary people, if they could read of course. The church was still a large part of people's lives. It was estimated that 50% of all people attended church on a Sunday in 1850. Those people who broke the law might find themselves imprisoned on an old ship, either in the Thames or near the Isle of Wight. The death rate for such people was around 30%.
