Back to the Stone Age calendar

The Tudors
Timeline

Around about this time, stone circles began to appear on the landscape. Again, and I seem to be saying this rather a lot, no one knows exactly what their significance was. At this time they were just simple stones set in a circular shape. They could have been meeting places but the fact that they are circular may point to another use. Now that these people were farming, the seasons, the time of year, mattered to them. They didn’t write and they had no calendar. How could you know what time of year it was?

A simple answer is that the sun, the same one you look at, is at a different point in the sky at different times of the year. These people had no clocks either. If they got up at sunrise and checked which stone the sun was over it would give them an idea as to what time of year it was. The same was true with where it was when they went to bed. Have you any ideas as to why these stone circles could be there? I have put some pictures of stone circles that you can see today in England. Go out and look for some.
