Did you know you are reading all of this because of just one man. No, not me. OK I'm writing it and then coding it, but the world wide web (www) was invented by another Englishman called Tim Berners-Lee. Interestingly, he went to the same school as my father and carelessly, he is 6 years younger than me.

Basically, and put simply because otherwise I wouldn't understand it, the web is an information space where pages and documents are identified by a unique Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Web pages are made up of text, images, videos and/or audio. Hyperlinks allow you to navigate between pages. Websites exist for many reasons, some to inform, some to entertain, some for business use, some for government use and some to allow people to interact with each other. It was in 1992, it would seem, that the first commercial server, a place where all the files are stored, came into being.

Nowadays it is easy to set up your own website using one of many ready-made programmes. For your information, Owlbut's is coded by me and if you miss out a comma or “ or < or > or really anything, it all goes wrong, very wrong, sometimes so wrong you can't even see it and that is wrong. If it's right, then you only see the bits that are not in <> brackets.

I guess you all know about making sure you are safe when using the internet. In many cases you never really know who is sending you messages, writing pages and putting up pictures. It is easy to take someone else's pictures and say they are yours. It's also easy to pretend to be someone you are not.

Sadly, it's also easy for people to put things on the net about you that are not true or to send you bullying messages. People who do this are really very, very sad and, quite obviously, cowards because they are hiding behind being able to say these things anonymously. But it happens to lots of people and it has happened to me too.

And one other thing. Don't believe everything you read on the net that looks as though it is real news. It may not be. In other words, be very careful and be very smart. Take care owlettes, the internet world can be a funny place, and I don't mean amusing. If you have a problem and you want to write to Owlbut about it, please do.
