The Tudors
Timeline

I suppose you could argue that on 6 May 1994 Great Britain stopped being an island. This was the day that the Channel Tunnel was officially opened. Her Majesty the Queen, very good at opening bridges too, performed the opening ceremony with the French President Francois Mitterand. The tunnel was the first land link between Britain and Europe since the last ice age 8,000 years ago. Another person present was Frenchman Philippe Cozette, who drilled the hole that first joined the two ends of the tunnel in December 1990.

The tunnel, which does not allow road traffic only trains, took 8 years to build and cost £10 billion. The trains either take passengers or cars, obviously with passengers inside.

The tunnel is 31 miles (50 kms) long of which 23 miles (37 kms) is under the sea. The average depth under the sea in 150 feet (45 metres) and the train journey takes 20 mins unlike a ferry which takes just over an hour.

People could now get from London to Paris in 3 hours.
