Culture still revolved around the church. Marriage would now be recognised if both people said words of assent. That's the same today with the two people usually saying “I do”. Knights and barons would take part in jousting competitions and tournaments. These were held monthly. In a jousting competition two knights would ride toward each other, either side of a barrier, and when they were close enough they would try to hit the shield of the opponent with their lance. This was quite dangerous because if you missed the shield you could stab the human or if you hit with such a force the other rider fell off his horse. Falling off a horse wearing a suit of armour was not a pleasant experience. I don’t know though, because owls don’t do such stupid things. It was also a good time, the tournament not when lying on the floor in a suit of armour struggling to get up, to talk to lords and knights. Books were starting to appear and I want to tell you some advice from a man called John Russell in his “Book of Nurture”.

Do not pick your nose, or let it drip, or sniff, or blow so loud your lord hears it
Do not lick a dish with your tongue to get dust out
Do not belch, or spit too far, or laugh or talk too loudly
Whether you spit near or far, hold your hand in front of your mouth to hide it

I have just asked Richard to spit far but hide it. He now has a very wet hand. You humans are so funny.
