There were some changes in the diet for peasants. As the feudal system disappeared and peasants grew a little wealthier their diets improved. After the loss of life following the Black Death there was also more food to go round. In towns, shops were selling roast meat. Roast pig, lamb and goose were the most expensive, double the price of chicken, rabbit, mallard and partridge. You could also buy, why do I have to keep writing this, roast finches, herons, thrushes and larks among other things. You could get 40 finches for the price of one pig and 45 eggs for the price of one chicken. Forgetting the things you humans don't eat any more, are the prices the same today. I mean can you buy 45 eggs for the same price as a chicken? Is pork, lamb and goose roughly the same price per kilo? Take a look next time you go shopping. Religion played a part in diets as the church said you couldn’t eat meat on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. At feasts in the manor house there would be a high table at the end of the room for the lord and his important guests while others would eat at low tables around the hall. They still didn’t use forks while spoons were laid face down to keep out the devil. If you look in the front of a spoon you will see yourself upside down and maybe people couldn't understand this and thought the devil was involved.
