World War One, despite the main battles being fought overseas, still had a great effect on people's daily lives, especially woman. So many men were sent to fight that the jobs they had done in factories, in farming and in some other areas were now taken over by women. But after World War One, firms were encouraged to dismiss women so that jobs could be found for the men returning from the war. Many women went back to being in service or as full-time house wives. Education was now compulsory so children were away from home during the day. The various employment laws that had been passed in the Victorian era plus the growth of unions looking after workers rights meant work became more civilised. People would work from 8 till 6 in many professions. Many, even in offices, would also work Saturday mornings.
