This was a time of big changes in the food people ate and how they bought it. Tinned food became very popular. In 1920 there were 3 canning factories in England, by 1929 there were 80. Between the wars, those women who didn't have a servant would spend more time at home cooking for the family. Meals became fairly regular in poor and middle-class families. Everything was based around the Sunday roast. It would provide cold meat for the next few days, possibly with bubble and squeak, which was mashed vegetable leftovers, fried up. Any meat left by Wednesday might be used in a stew. Breakfast could be porridge, sweetened with brown sugar and made with milk or water, or, in 1924 breakfast cereals, firstly corn flakes, arrived from the United States of America. It was also during this time that bottles of milk began to be delivered to individual homes. The milkman would travel around on an electric milk float and leave as many bottles as the owner of the house had requested. Once you had used the milk you would put the bottles out the next morning to be collected, washed and re-used. In those days there was no massive plastic waste. Milk wasn't the only item delivered on wheels as, with improved refrigeration, men would cycle around cities selling ice cream
