Some Roman culture was the same as Celtic culture. Both people worshipped different gods but the Romans built huge temples to worship in. I've listed some of the most important gods and goddesses below:-
Jupiter, the most powerful god who could hurl thunderbolts. He was afraid of no-one.
Juno, his sister and wife who watched over all the women in Rome.
Neptune, Jupiter's brother and god of the sea.
Minerva, a daughter of Jupiter and the goddess of wisdom.
Mars, Jupiter's son, and the god of war.
Venus, the goddess of love and beauty.
Apollo, another of Jupiter's sons and the god of music, light and the sun.
Diana, twin sister of Apollo and the goddess of hunting.
Vulcan, son of Jupiter, husband of Venus and the god who made the first human woman out of clay. He called her Pandora.
Mercury, another son of Jupiter and the messenger of the gods.
Ceres, a sister of Juno and the goddess of the harvest and where we get the word “cereal”.
Vesta, another sister of Juno and the goddess of homes and children.
The Romans had many other gods too and even worshipped their emperors as gods. The picture is the temple built to Claudius in Colchester. They brought writing to Britain and constructed statues in the true likeness of people, something that Britons had never seen. For Romans, washing was very important. They built bathhouses. Men and women would go at separate times. It was a very social occasion where you would meet up with friends and gossip and even play dice and other games.
