People would nearly all be working for a Roman master. Retired soldiers would be given a piece of land and the peasants locally be expected to look after this land as well as their own. Others would work in the shops and markets, helping with administrative duties or work in a villa. Life there could be very good for the slaves and servants who would live quite well. They had food and somewhere to sleep. They had to work hard by looking after the owner and his family or by working in the fields but it would be better than being attacked by other tribes. However, the Roman way of life was to make ordinary people pay taxes for almost everything. You were taxed for owning land and animals and even taxed if you wanted to travel. Some Roman men would marry British women and so a bigger link between the two cultures would be started. The British discovered things they had never known. The Romans were very clean people and built bathhouses. Men and women went at different times. First slaves would cover you in oil to make you sweat and then you would go into a hot room where more slaves would scrape the dirt off your body using a metal scraper. Finally you would dive into a cool pool but the water in the cool pool wasn’t changed very often so when you came back a few days later you might be diving into your own dirt, and the dirt of several hundred other men and women. The Romans also had purpose built toilets. Men and women had separate rooms but there were no cubicles.
