Back to the Angles and Saxons calendar

Title
Timeline

By now the Angles, Saxons and Jutes were in control of much of England. Some Romano Britons remained and some towns were still lived in but the Angles and Saxons often preferred to live in villages a little bit like our Iron Age people before. They made a lasting impression on all of you in one way because even today people call the English, Anglo-Saxons, but we will wait until the next section before adopting this name for the people of England.

The land was divided into shires and each shire was split into hundreds. These shires were run by ealdormen and shire reeves. If you look at all those words you will see how they have come down into our society. Many of our counties end in the word “shire”; earls are a part of our world and, more in olden days, a sheriff would help administer an area.
