Not only were the Angles and Saxons giving us words that we still use today but parts of England were beginning to be named.
In 477AD Ælle a Saxon warlord landed on the south coast near Chichester and after battles lasting several months defeated and killed most of the Britons and set
up of the kingdom of South Saxons which we now know as Sussex.
Later in 495AD more Saxons landed near Southampton, captured the old Roman town at Winchester and set up the kingdom of West Saxons, later known as
Wessex. Then in 527AD another tribe landed near London, headed north and founded the kingdom of East Saxons; Essex.
