Again there was very little change from the previous two hundred years. Cattle now became more popular than pigs because cattle can give you milk, far more milk than you can get from sheep or goats. The skin from the cattle they killed and ate was used to make leather for belts. Horns would be used as drinking cups. Another drink they made was called mead and honey was used to make this. Honey was still the only ingredient to use as a sweetener and beeswax was also popular for making candles which didn't have such a bad smell. I told you last time how these people would store their vegetables but they also had to store the meat and fish, which they still caught, if they were close to a river or the sea. This was often done by smoking the meat or fish. Smoking food takes time. You can buy smoked fish and bacon in your supermarkets today. Try it. Another way to preserve meat, fish and indeed cabbage and beans was by salting; soaking the item in salt and water. The rich and powerful Anglo-Saxons loved to have feasts for any reason they could think of, especially to celebrate a great victory. They would eat roast meats, lots of different fruit and honey-bread flavoured with spices and seeds. The monks in the monasteries (see culture) were not allowed to eat any meat from a 4-legged animal.
