As Christianity became more popular so the church started to control family life. Missionaries weren't always totally honest about things. They tried to convince the poorer peasants that worshipping God would improve their lives. There were church laws as to what you could eat and what you could do. Monasteries became very popular. These were places where learned Christian men called monks could study and pray. The wealthy lords donated to these places and then the monks would offer to pray for those lords and their families. These lords also sent their sons away to a monastery to learn. This meant that these boys would come back, not only with more knowledge, but also converted to Christian ways. Latin was the language used in monasteries and, just for fun, Richard has asked me to tell you to look up “non modo sed etiam”, which, so he says, was in the last sentence. Fifty three years since he studied Latin and he still remembers some. He obviously didn't remember it so well then as he failed his exam in it. Hahaha. Some girls would become nuns, the female equivalent of monks, and join a nunnery. Great feasts were still very popular. A bard would come along and tell stories about brave ancestors and their daring deeds or even the lord holding the feast. The stories were always good as otherwise the bard didn't get paid. Music would be played on a harp and there would be jugglers to entertain. Another way of amusing themselves was with elaborate riddles. People would also play dice, a popular Roman game, and a form of chess.
