Television stations and home entertainment exploded. By 1991 there were 4 TV channels, by 2000 probably over 300. TV programmes had massive audiences and many entertainers became stars. The first home computers appeared, one of which was the BBC pictured. Music became available on a CD and the machines to play them on could be carried around with you. You could have music anywhere, anytime. While the working class still had far less money, they became greater in number and the mass markets catered more for them. Class distinction, as opposed to wealth difference, became far less noticeable. Britain became a truly multi-cultural society with immigrants arriving from all over the commonwealth and, at the same time, many people leaving the country to head for those commonwealth countries. Back in the last period, Australia offered a package to Britons to go and live there for just the cost of a £10 ticket on a ship. Many took up the offer. People were becoming far more able to move around as they wanted. In fact, if Richard's mother hadn't suggested he might never see her again and what would happen if she was ill, you might not be reading this as the history of England.
