By now things had changed big time. More women had jobs. As I said in another hoot, a woman no longer had to stay at home to prepare the meals which could take a couple of hours to do, having spent another couple of hours trawling up and down the High Street to the different stores. Inventions such as the washing machine and tumble dryer meant that chore was done while you did something else. More and more time-saving appliances meant more and more leisure time, except the surge in popularity of the television meant more leisure time was spent sitting down and looking at a box in the corner of your room. The video recorder meant you didn't even have to be there to watch it when it was broadcast. Life went from very little being automated to nearly everything being done for you by a machine. The car became easier to afford for the working class and this made people more mobile at a time of their choosing instead of having to be governed by bus and train timetables and routes. The strange thing was that it seemed people had less time to do things, possibly because leisure time, your time, was now seen as an essential part of life, rather than something you fitted in when there was time.
