You may be noticing a familiar pattern running through the hoots of this period. It's all about massive changes. Food was no exception. Shopping was no longer done on a daily basis. This allowed more women, who had traditionally spent time shopping for, and preparing, the family meals, to go out to work. Shopping became a one stop trip. As Britain became multi-cultural so did our food. Curries, pizzas and Chinese food appeared as did the take-away fast food shops. The first McDonald's had opened in London in 1974. Pre-packaged food was the norm. When the microwave oven came along so did microwave dinners, first marketed in 1986 and bought in a tin tray. More knowledge about food meant nearly everything became easier to prepare. Porridge, made by adding oats to water in a steaming cauldron over an open fire as had been done by our Stone Age friends, was now available in a pot to which you simply added hot water.
