England has a massive variety of food from different cultures all over the world. Nearly all food is bought in large hyper-markets that sell all manner of things. Some of these are owned by European companies who offer cheaper prices. These are growing quite fast. Frozen food is very popular. English television has hundreds of cookery programmes and nearly every chef is a celebrity and writes books. Some programmes show people how to cook while others are competitions between ordinary people. The British Bake-off is the most popular. Despite all of these programmes, there are hundreds of take-aways offering food from many different cultures as well as traditional British food like fish and chips and the burger that came from the United States of America. Supermarkets also offer ready meals. The British seem very food conscious and dieting is a big thing. There are many restaurants in all towns and cities while pubs offer more standard, conventional English food like Steak and Ale pie, roast dinners or bangers and mash, which are sausages and mashed potatoes.
