Most people work in the service industries either in offices or shops. There are some call centres but many of these are run overseas. Children go to school from the age of 4 but younger ones are given free education in child care centres and a nursery. Many women now work. Work is usually from 9am to 5pm and they have time for lunch. People commute to work sometimes for over an hour each-way. Although, unlike we read in earlier times, there are very few servants in people's houses, there are companies who will come and clean your house and also companies who will send you all the ingredients for your evening meal and all you have to do is cook it. Life seems to be lived at a very fast pace and this results in quite a few people suffering from stress related illnesses. People are also living longer and this has put great pressure on the National Health Service which can't seem to cope. Many English universities will have loads of foreign students. There is also quite a lot of unemployment among young people which may be because older people are now working until they are almost 70 (so true - Richard's comment, even though he loves it) .
