With over 50 million people now living in England, houses are being built faster than ever before. Many of them are on estates where most houses seem to look the same. However many young people can't seem to afford these houses and so they end up renting older properties. Very small homes, tiny one-bedroomed, even one room, flats can be found in major cities. Gardens are very small if they are there at all. People who live in high-rise buildings no longer feel so safe after some recent disasters. New homes all have central heating and double-glazed windows. Most floors are completely carpeted. This makes them warm. A few houses have solar panels on the roof but most use electricity and gas to heat and provide power. Houses are usually made of brick, some are made of wood but these are not that popular because of the fire risk. Where new estates are built it is usual for large supermarkets to be opened nearby. Older people will often live in a special care home with qualified people to look after them. They may sell their own home to pay for this.
